Ryan Reynolds-Led Whoddunnit Film Finds Its New Writer

According to Deadline, 20th Century Studios has officially enlisted screenwriter Oren Uziel to rework the script of its forthcoming mystery comedy remake of Clue, based on the 1985 classic film of the same name. Ryan Reynolds is still attached to lead the project which has been in development since 2019.

Uziel recently co-wrote the screenplay of Paramount Pictures’ adventure comedy The Lost City which starred Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. His film writing credits also include 22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox, and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.

Clue will be directed by James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass), who’s currently filming Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Bobin replaced Jason Bateman after the actor-director exited the project due to scheduling conflicts with the production of Ozark.

Based on Hasbro’s popular game of the same name, the first draft was initially written by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are both working with Reynolds for Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3. Producers are Reynolds for Maximum Effort Productions, eOne, and 20th Century Studios.

Clue was a 1985 comedy based on the board game, which involves players figuring out which of the guests at a mansion murdered someone, with which murder weapon, and in which room. The film was directed by Jonathan Lynn. Lynn worked on the script with John Landis.

The original starred Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren. The film had one of three possible endings, and different theaters received different ones. All were included in the home video release. Though the film didn’t do well in its box office run, only making $14.6 million in domestic sales, it has become a cult classic.
