Although she was already one of the most powerful fighters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Maki just got a major upgrade that brings her closer to Toji’s level.
Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 197The manga Jujutsu Kaisen already has a cast of incredibly strong fighters, but one of its most powerful characters just got a big upgrade. The series by Gege Akutami features a flexible power system that grants its users some broken abilities. Ironically, one of the manga’s most powerful fighters doesn’t actually use this power system as a source of strength.
Maki Zenin is the daughter of a powerful clan of sorcerers that was born without the ability to use cursed energy. In exchange for this, her physical abilities are far beyond an average human’s and this enabled her to become a powerful Jujutsu sorcerer in her own right. In doing this she follows in the footsteps of Toji Fushiguro another incredibly powerful fighter strong enough to even almost kill Satoru Gojo without using cursed energy. After the Shibuya incident, her family tried to kill her and her twin sister, which caused her sister to sacrifice herself to make Maki even more powerful. This additional power enabled her to wipe out her clan in an all out battle, but she still lacks to skill to put her on the same level as Toji. That is, until now.
In chapter 197 Maki has an epiphany after training with a sumo-obsessed sorcerer in his hyperbolic time chamber-esque domain expansion. She realizes that even though the atmosphere in any given location may seem empty, differences in temperature and density create various surfaces that she can grab onto and manipulate. This gives her greatly increased maneuverability in a fight, even enabling her to dodge Naoya’s incredibly fast attacks. It also brings her one step closer to being on Toji’s level, the ultimate ideal that she is trying to attain.
Maki’s New Speed Almost Puts Her on Toji’s Level
Becoming more like Toji was actually the inspiration for her epiphany, realizing that if only she was more like him, she could have adequately protected herself and her allies from Naoya’s initial attacks. And clearly she has achieved this, as Naoya is reminded of Toji when he sees her fight against him using her new technique. While Maki was already strong, she didn’t have the skill to use her incredible power, which is a big part of what made Toji so powerful. Her new technique now greatly increases how skillfully she can use her already impressive abilities.
Jujutsu Kaisen already has a stacked roster of incredibly powerful characters, so Maki’s upgrade may not seem that impressive. But given how Maki is the only Jujutsu Kaisen character who can break the Culling Game rules, she is especially important and is likely a high-priority target for the enemy to eliminate. Now that she has upgraded her powers though, Maki has become even more of an asset for Jujutsu Kaisen‘s protagonists and will likely play an even larger role in the battles to come.
