My Hero Academia: 12 Fan Theories About The U.A Traitor, Ranked

Spoiler Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the My Hero Academia manga and anime series. My Hero Academia tends to prioritize high-octane shonen action over all else, though that’s not to say that the series isn’t full of mystery and intrigue. Among all the mysteries in the show’s premise, the hidden identity of the UA traitor is one that could drastically change the direction of the show’s overarching premise.

Over the years, many fans have taken it upon themselves to put together all the little pieces of the overarching puzzle and guess who My Hero Academia‘s turncoat traitor could be. Unsurprisingly, many of them have come out with some very plausible theories.

Updated on September 19th, 2022 by Tanner Fox: Chapter 336 of the My Hero Academia manga revealed that Class 1-A’s Yuga Aoyama was the U.A. traitor, though he was made to do so against his will. Born quirkless, Aoyama’s parents were desperate to find a way to give him a quirk so that he wouldn’t become the victim of discrimination. Unfortunately, they went to All For One, who granted Aoyama his naval laser quirk, but it landed his family in some seriously hot water.

This revelation has yet to be portrayed in the anime, but the thrill of speculating over the villains’ secret asset is now over. Still, it can be fun to recount older fan theories and see which ones were closest to the truth.

12 Kaminari Denki Is The Traitor

Since there is an entire 4chan Study Board dedicated to this, it is among the most popular and believable theories surrounding the UA traitor. Denki comes off as someone who doesn’t take anything seriously and even when it comes to academics, he’s not all that bright.

But, in contrast to his silly demeanor, he often seems to have vivid details of events he should know nothing about—not to mention his suspicious behavior at the USJ attack adds more heft to this theory.

11 Toru Hagakure Is The Traitor

For the most part, Toru Hagakure is a secondary character who rarely influences the overarching premise of My Hero Academia. However, it’s her invisibility quirk that demands suspicion.

According to this theory, it’ll be easy for Toru to snoop around, find all the secrets that the heroes behold, and then plan evil deeds without being noticed by anyone. Despite being portrayed as comic relief, there are moments where Toru proves to be really powerful. For instance, she surprised everyone with her super move during the Provisional Hero License Exam.

10 Mashirao Ojiro

Ojiro is a very unassuming character in the My Hero Academia anime series; a strong, silent type who seems to have a relatively unimpressive quirk, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll ever play a huge role in future events.

However, much of the discussion surrounding Ojiro concerns the possibility of him harboring a secret second quirk. If that’s true, this could also connect him to All For One, who may have granted him that second quirk. Plus, given how little fans know about him, it’s not impossible that there’s much more to him than meets the eye.

9 Ochaco Uraraka

Some fans have speculated that Ochaco Uraraka could be hiding something, and, while her betrayal would be utterly heartbreaking, there are a few tenuous reasons to suspect the Class 1-A student.

Uraraka has explained that she wants to become a hero so she can lift her family out of poverty. With that in mind, One For All may have stepped in and done just that in exchange for Ochaco’s allegiance. Additionally, she warmed up to Izuku Midoriya surprisingly quickly—perhaps even suspiciously quickly.

8 Minoru Mineta Is The Traitor

Minoru Mineta is among the few students of Class 1-A whose abilities seem practically useless. Along with that, his relentless acts of perversion throughout the runtime of the series have given him a bad reputation. So, it would be fair to say that he’s not a fan-favorite.

Due to this, despite the lack of concrete evidence surrounding the theory, many fans believe—or want to believe, at least—that Minoru Mineta is the UA traitor. If this theory turns out to be true, many viewers will be caught off-guard as Mineta has always been hyped about being a true hero despite his abilities, or lack thereof.

7 Mezo Shoji Is The Traitor

It’s Shoji’s frightening appearance that initially made many fans suspicious about his true motives. However, if one solely considers his personality when he’s around other UA students, almost no one is as friendly and kind as him.

A Redditor explained how his selflessness is only a facade, as he’s very likely to be the UA traitor. The theory suggests that his enhanced hearing can easily allow him to eavesdrop on his teachers and fellow students to know all about their secrets. Moreover, his ambiguous backstory ranks him among the top suspects.

6 Nezu Is The Traitor

When it comes to authority, there’s no one above Nezu at the UA, but many fans have been questioning his responsibility all the authority he holds. For starters, he’s not human and seemingly has some serious grudges against the ones who treated him like a lab rat and conducted nefarious experiments on him.

Adding to that, Nezu is also among the most intelligent characters of the series. Due to this, many believe that he could be cleverly plotting evil acts behind-the-scenes without coming under any hero’s radar.

5 No One From Class 1-B Could Be The Traitor

A fan on Reddit suggested that, considering how the revelation of the UA traitor can completely change the course of the series, it seems likely that the traitor will be one of the primary characters.

This theory rules out all the students of Class 1-B, as they get very limited screentime. In addition, it also eliminates other primary heroes from the suspicion window.

4 Momo Yaoyorozu Is Unknowingly The Traitor

A Redditor delved deep into Momo’s background and came out with this plausible theory. According to it, the only thing that’s known about Momo’s family is that she comes from a very royal household. But, other than that, the identity of her parents remains to be a mystery.

So, it is possible that, unbeknownst to her, her parents are the traitors and have been funding My Hero Academia’s league of villains all this time. Not only that, but they’ve also been revealing UA’s location to the villains by keeping a track of their daughter’s whereabouts.

3 Yuga Aoyama Is The Traitor

In appearance, Yuga comes off as someone who wouldn’t even dare to harm the ones around him. But, at the same time, his social awkwardness suggests that there’s a lot more to him than meets the eye. Yuga has had a long history of disappearances in the face of danger every time the students of Class 1-A have confronted the villains.

While his disappearances are never acknowledged because everyone believes that he’s just afraid of confrontation, these disappearances might be hinting at his involvement with My Hero Academia’s bad guys.

2 There Are Many Traitors

By now, it’s pretty evident that the traitor has to be someone capable of going toe-to-toe with some of the school’s best students, including Midoriya and Bakugo, so, maybe—just maybe—there’s not just one traitor, but an entire group of them. After all, there are plenty of side characters about whom fans don’t know much at all.

As pointed out by a Redditor, the entire class 2-A or 3-B could consist of traitors, as Midoriya may not stand a chance against all their quirks combined.

1 Vlad King Is The Traitor

While most theories point fingers at the students of UA High School, there are some that stack solid evidence against staff member Vlad King. One explanation of this theory is that, during the USJ attack, none of the villains knew anything about the quirks of Class 1-A. This itself dismisses all class 1-A students as traitors because the traitor would be well-versed with the abilities of their classmates and would have mentioned it to the villains.

There are other incidents where Vlad has shown a strange amount of interest in knowing more about the quirks of Class 1-A. Additionally, he also seemed extremely anxious when Aizawa defended Bakugo during a press conference.
